Alfred Spigarelli
Of Counsel
French and European Patent Attorney
Biography
A generalist engineer by training, Alfred Spigarelli has been active in the patent field for nearly 40 years. He began his career in industry before joining the European Patent Office (EPO) as an examiner, where he held several management positions between 2004 and 2018.
During this period, he played a leading role in modernizing the European patent system and the PCT. He led the update of the EPO Guidelines and a revision of the Implementing Regulations of the EPC, participated in the PCT reform, and helped launch several initiatives that are now key tools in EPO procedures. From 2016 to 2018, he was also responsible for quality management at the EPO.
Since 2018, he has been representing and advising international firms, companies, and colleagues in complex proceedings before the EPO. He is also active as a trainer, CEIPI/EPI tutor, and speaker on patent law in Europe and the United States.
His unique expertise - on both sides of the bench and at the crossroads of practice, procedure, and strategy - makes him a key figure in the European IP landscape.
